Earth-bermed and earth-covered dwellings by Frank Moreland are in the top rank of sustainable, energy-efficient, low maintenance, durable and safe structures on earth. Even earthquakes and firestorms pose minimal threat to these structures. His homes are full of natural light, fresh air, light, beauty and fun.
There are four basic types of Earth-Integrated dwellings:
Type I - is earth-bermed, usually 5 or 6 feet up three walls, with a very tough wood or steel structure superimposed for upper walls and roof.
Type II - has 3 feet of earth on the roof, but minor berming against walls.
Type IIIMED - has 3 feet of earth on the roof sloped to berms against three walls.
Type IIIHEAVY - has 7 feet of earth on the roof sloped to berms against three walls.

Frank Moreland has designed a series of earth-bermed and earth-covered homes throughout Texas and served as contractor for their specially designed concrete structures for more than 20 years. For construction documents, see books. His dwellings have been featured in newspapers, magazines and television.

A former professor of architecture, Mr. Moreland has published studies on earth-covered buildings for the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, all of the United States of America (see books).

At long last, Moreland will soon begin building his own earth-covered residence, a Type IIIMED using a new and experimental technology.
